I was bitten by a stray dog near my school. My grandmother told me to tie it with cloth. A nurse at the local clinic saw me and immediately made me wash it for 15 minutes. She explained what rabies was. I got the vaccine that day. I didn't even know that bite could have killed me.
In ten years as a rural nurse, I've seen too many preventable deaths. The pattern is always the same — a child is bitten, hides it from parents, and by the time they are brought to us the window has closed. We need children to know that telling an adult is not getting in trouble. It is saving your own life.
After my cousin died from rabies in 2022, I became determined to do something. I worked with local vets and our barangay health centre to organise a mass vaccination day. 200 dogs vaccinated. Every person who showed up received a Pet Owner's Checklist. Nobody in our village has died from rabies since.
