The Founding Story

How WhatIsRabies.com Began

"A few years ago, someone very close to me was bitten by a stray dog. At the time, we didn't think much of it — just a small wound. Days passed, and the signs began: restlessness, confusion, a fear of water. By the time we understood what was happening, it was too late. Rabies took that person's life — not because treatment didn't exist, but because we didn't know what to do."

That loss changed me forever. The helplessness of watching someone die from something that a single visit to a hospital could have prevented — it stays with you.

Then, some time later, I was speaking with a friend from another part of the world. I mentioned rabies in conversation — and they had never heard of it. A disease that kills 59,000 people a year. Still completely unknown to an educated adult in a connected world.

That moment was the turning point. If my friend — with access to the internet, to education, to healthcare — didn't know what rabies was, how many people in high-burden regions had even less information?

That's why WhatIsRabies.com exists. Not from a policy brief. Not from a grant application. From grief — and from the belief that no one should lose a life from ignorance.
